Plan of Action
We highly support the efforts of this bill to accommodate the nursing shortage by increasing the number of graduates from baccalaureate programs. In order to circulate information about this bill and encourage its passage, we have created a plan of action. Our first step was the development of this blog, which is continually updated with current information pertaining to this bill. We have included background information, why this change is necessary, and its co-sponsors. Next, we will contact our state legislators and provide them with the information that we have researched about this bill. We will express to them why we think the issue is relevant and the importance of getting this bill to pass. We will invite them to view our blog so they can get a better view on the bill and our position.

I think this is an awesome bill and that it is great that this group is supporting it. It was nice to see you all already have a plan of action laid out and ready to put in action. Will the background as to why the bill is necessary have an research studies cited as ressources? Do you plan on contacting all the legislators who support the bill or all the ones in the area? Awesome job everyone!
This bill is so important, especially since we have a growing elderly population in our country today who will need nursing care in the near future. This blog is a great way to get the word out, and to get others to support this bill. Your plan of action is clear and well stated. Have you come across any downsides of the bill, besides having to spend extra money? It seems that this bill would do a world of good, and I can't think why it would not be supported.
This bill is greatly needed, and the JMU nursing program is wonderful evidence of that. However, some may feel as though limiting what the programs can spend the money on (particularly building new facilities) can hinder the growth of the programs. If they have inadequate facilities, then they can't accept as many students, but the number of students they accept determines the size of the grant they receive. It seems like it could become a cycle that ultimately makes the bill less effective.
We think that this bill is very important to the health of everyone involved in the health care setting. With opportunities for increased education, there will be an increased knowledge and therefore nurses will be able to provide better care for their patients. Also, patient satisfaction will increase because they will know that the nurse caring for them has adequate knowledge to care for them properly.
Casey,
Besides the fact of having to spend extra money there has not been any other downsides the bill found in our research. However, taking this into consideration, having to spend extra money for nurses' education might be more difficult to take into action than to say in words due to the current state of our economy.
Kim,
We don't have any research studies currently sited as to why this bill should be passed. However, there is significant amount of research out there dealing with the nursing shortage. We have several statistics that back up the validity of our bill and why it is so vital that it be passed. Most of these are listed under "Need for Change". JCO found in 2002 that 24% of hospital patients deaths and injuries, nursing shortage contributed. An astounishing statistic is that in 2006-2007 42,866 qualified applicats were turned away from Bacclaurete and Graduate school nursing programs! This is huge and if we could increase the funding, then there could be more professors, more classroom space, more clinical preceptors and in turn- more nurses!
